Bright Blooming of Darkness

Bestijg met ons de monumentale burcht van Leiden, om daar af te dalen naar het duister. De duisternis die in ieder van ons huist en enkel bestaan kan bij de gratie van het licht. Ervaar hoe licht en donker aan elkaar gewaagd zijn, nu het duister steeds vroeger op de avond onze stad in slaap sust.
Laat je door deze droom meevoeren. Of is het zinsbegoocheling...? En zie wat er voor wonderlijks ontkiemt en opbloeit vanuit het peilloze duister, naar de bron van het licht.

Unieke kans
Voor deze voorstelling verwelkomen wij de Japanse Butoh-danser Atsushi Takenouchi en muzikante Hiroko Komiya. Butoh-dansvoorstellingen zijn nauwelijks te zien in Nederland, dus dit is een unieke kans om het een keer te ervaren!

Butoh dans
De bewegingsvorm van waaruit Geert van der Velden werkt, heeft zijn wortels in Japanse Butoh, een dansvorm die verwant is aan wat in Europa ‘Ausdruckstanz’ wordt genoemd. Butoh komt voort uit de diepste universele gevoelens van de mens en haar relatie met de (natuurlijke) locatie waar de performance plaatsvindt. Daarmee overschrijdt Butoh de grenzen waar het herkenning en inleving betreft.

Al eerder creëerde Fields of Wonder samen met Atsushi en Hiroko de voorstellingen Fields of Colour (Lisse 2005), Colours Of Time (Leiden 2006), WIER (Leiden 2008), Japanmarkt (Sieboldhuis Leiden 2009), Luchtruim (Leiden 2009) en Ik Adem De Wereld (Delft 2010). Voorafgaand aan enkele van deze producties organiseerden we een workshop waarin Atsushi, Hiroko en Geert samen vorm gaven aan het eindresultaat. Uiteraard met Butoh-dans en de speellocatie als uitgangspunt.

Het aardse van deze ‘oerdans’ leidt ons terug naar onze innerlijke natuur, naar emoties als verdriet, liefde en trouw en het legt verbindingen tussen geboorte en dood. Daarmee biedt deze kunstvorm de mogelijkheid om te herkennen wat we niet eerder kenden, om ons in te leven in wat onbekend was.

De performance en de installatie doorbreken de vaste patronen door onverwachte ontmoetingen mogelijk te maken tussen: publiek, performers en de natuurlijke en monumentale omgeving. Het brengt nieuwe ervaringen voor alle zintuigen, voor wie zich over durft te geven aan deze onbekende wereld. Kortom, laat u verwonderen tijdens deze unieke voorstelling.

Join us in ascending the monumental fortress of Leiden, only to descend into darkness. The darkness that resides within each of us and can only exist by the grace of light. Experience how light and darkness are evenly matched, as darkness increasingly earlier in the evening lulls our city to sleep. Let yourself be carried away by this dream. Or is it an illusion...? And see what wondrous things sprout and blossom from the unfathomable darkness, towards the source of light.

Unique opportunity
For this performance, we welcome Japanese Butoh dancer Atsushi Takenouchi and musician Hiroko Komiya. Butoh dance performances are rarely seen in the Netherlands, so this is a unique opportunity to experience it!

Butoh dance
The Butoh dance grammar from which Geert van der Velden works, has its roots in Japan and is a dance form related to what is called 'Ausdruckstanz' in Europe. Butoh emerges from the deepest universal feelings of humanity and its relationship with the (natural) location where the performance takes place. Thus, Butoh transcends boundaries when it comes to recognition and empathy. 
Previously Fields of Wonder, together with Atsushi and Hiroko, created the performances Fields of Colour (Lisse 2005), Colours Of Time (Leiden 2006), WIER (Leiden 2008), Japanmarkt (Sieboldhuis Leiden 2009), Luchtruim (Leiden 2009), and Ik Adem De Wereld (Delft 2010). 

Prior to some of these productions, we organized a workshop in which Atsushi, Hiroko, and Geert collaborated to shape the final outcome. Of course, Butoh dance and the performance location served as the starting point in all these performances. The earthiness of this 'primordial dance' leads us back to our inner nature, to emotions like sadness, love, and loyalty, and it establishes connections between birth and death. This art form thus offers the possibility to recognize what we did not know before, to empathize with what was unknown.

The performance and installation break the fixed patterns by enabling unexpected encounters between the audience, performers, and the natural and monumental surroundings. It brings new experiences for all the senses, for those who dare to surrender to this unfamiliar world. In short, open up your heart and mind and let yourself be amazed during this unique performance.
